Parasites and
particularly the flea are responsible for the majority of irritating skin
conditions. This can lead to inflammation, scratching, scaling, licking and
hair loss. Persistent scratching can result in bacterial skin infections. The
latter can cause pustules and papules to form.
Signs of skin disease
Scratching, hair
loss, pigment change, inflammation, scurfy, dry scales and visible lumps.
Common causes of itchy skin
Parasites: Fleas, ear mites, scabies, lice, maggots,
harvest mites.
Infection: Bacteria, fungi
Allergies: Food allergy, dermatitis, hives
Shedding and losing hair
A dog’s coat often
sheds during warm weather. Central heating can upset this natural pattern, with
the result that many dogs shed their coats all year round. Females often shed
more during pregnancy and while lactating.
Alopecia or hair loss
This is different
from shedding since it causes partial baldness. Hair fails to grow, is licked
or scratched out. Parasitic, fungal conditions and hormonal disorders are the
common causes.
Treatment
Regular grooming
prevents many skin problems.
Feed a unique diet
that your dog has never had before, for at least five to six weeks. If the itchiness
abates, this is an indication of a food allergy.
If one of your pets
has fleas, mites or ticks, examine and treat all your pets, as well as your
home to eliminate immature parasites.
Consult your vet for
a thorough examination.
